How is glass made?
Molten glass is formed by heating up a combination of silica and sodium carbonate, with added lime, magnesium oxide and aluminium oxide, to form soda-lime glass. This is then rolled down a bed of molten tin that has been subjected to a atmosphere of nitrogen and hydrogen to prevent oxidization of the tin.

This molten is then cooled, and cut by machine, and then subjected to nitrogen at high pressure, to give it a shiny finish. Glass created using this method is “float glass”, which is name used for the “normal” glass used you find in glass installations today.

Glass for use in Shaw domestic properties typically comes in two varieties; single or double-glazed, with a choice of either float/annealed or toughened glass. Single-glazed windows with float glass can normally be fitted on the same day. Our Shaw glaziers are able to replace glass from either the outside or the inside of properties, if the framework allows it. If required, we can source scaffolding and/or lifting vehicles for high glass installations.
